Nov. 30, 1935 Ira L. Cotton Funeral services for Ira L. Cotton, 74, for 40 years a guard and gate keeper at the Michigan reformatory here; who died at his home 706 West Main street Friday, will be held from the home Monday afternoon, December 2 at 3 o'clock with Rev. Lewis B. Whittemore, pastor of the Grace church, of Grand Rapids, officiating. Mr. Cotton was born in Saranac, September 24, 1861, a son of Gilbert A. and Lucy M. Cotton, His father was postmaster at Saranac and after his death the mother became post mistress and following her death the son, Ira L.Cotton became postmaster and later moved to Grand Rapids where he was in the wholesale grocery business until forty years ago when he came to Ionia to become gatekeeper at the Michigan reformatory. In 1882 he was united in marriage to Miss Ida E. Jenks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Jenks, of Saranac. He was a member of the Royal Arconum, the modern Woodmen of America and of the vestry of the St.Johns Episcopal church and also sang in the church choir for forty years until the time of his illness which confined him to his bed. Surviving him are to daughters, Mrs. John H. Seabrook and Mrs. John J. Walsh, of Grand Rapids; a granddaughter, Mrs. Albert F. Hopkins, of Tuscaloosa. Ala.; a great- granddaughter, Leslie Martheen Hopkins. of Tuscaloosa; a nephew, J. Clyde Watt, of Ionia; a niece, Mrs.Henry Frost of Grand Rapids, and an uncle F .F.Cotton, oF Detroit. Those who have been appointed as bearers for the services are: John Beattie, Gerald Stebbins, Otto Perry, Harry Warns, Lloyd T. Smith and James K. Miller, Jr., of Grand Rapids, and honorary bearers are Edward Haight, Sr., and John Inman.
