He was born in Belding, November 16, 1903, the son of Fred A. Cottrell and Anna Chase Cottrell. The family moved to Ionia when he was 10 years old and he attended grade school and was a graduate of Ionia high school. He was employed at Pere Marquette car shops about two years, after which he was a sub clerk-carrier at Ionia post office two years and then went to work at Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co. in 1933. He worked there and for its successors Ionia Manufacturing and Smith Plastics until his illness three weeks ago. He was married June 17, 1929 to Helen Loper in Muir and moved to Ionia and they have made their home here since. Surviving are his wife Helen, one son Ivan R. of New Britain, Conn.; three daughters, Mrs. Elwood T. Spencer, Orleans, Mrs. Gordon W. Johnston of Ionia, Mrs. Ronald L. Jones of Jackson; nine grandchildren; one brother Copley of Ionia and one sister Mrs. Daniel McNichols of Detroit. He was a lifelong member of First Christian church, and at present was financial secretary, former deacon, elder and chairman of the board and member of Heloche-Keystone Sunday school class. He was formerly active in scouting and a member of Boy Scout board of review, member of local 420 United Furniture Workers union and former financial secretary of that union. He was active in Ionia bowling league and at his death was president of the community league and had been secretary of bowling league for several years. He was a former member of Portland Country club. Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Christian church with Rev. James Kendall officiating and burial will be in Memorial Gardens Shrine cemetery. Body will be at Boynton funeral home until noon Friday at which time it will be moved to the church. The family will be at the funeral home Wednesday and on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday afternoon from 2 to 4.
