Portland Observer, 31 Oct 1883

The jury in the inquest on the body of John Coulter of Danby, returned a 
verdict last Wednesday, that the deceased came to his death on the 21st day of 
June, 1883, in the township of Danby, by arsenical poisoning, administered, as 
the jury believe, by Nancy Coulter.  Mrs. Coulter was arrested last Monday by 
Sheriff Toan, and taken to Ionia.  She will be defended by Morse, Trowbridge & 
Co.  We understand the examination will be commenced in Sebewa, before Esquire 
Garlock next Saturday.  Strong effort are being made to have the said 
examination in this village, with what success, at this writing, we are unable 
to state.  Public feeling is against Mrs. Coulter in Danby and Sebewa, and 
taking everything in consideration we think it would be advisable to have it 
changed to Portland.  Some persons are advocating the theory that Mr. Coulter 
committed suicide, taking the arsenic himself.
