Ruth Evelyn Courser, 79, died Wednesday in Tarpon Springs, Fla.  She was born 
Jan. 12, 1901 in Sebewa Township, the daughter of Ralph and Lucy Halladay 
Friend.  Mrs. Courser attended the Portland schools and Ionia High School, and 
graduated from Ionia County Normal before teaching rural schools in the county.

She married Dale Courser Oct. 1, 1922 in Portland, and they made their home in 
rural Portland.  She attended Ferris Institute and received a B.A. degree in 
education from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.  Mrs. Courser taught 
third grade in the Clarksville schools before retiring in 1976.

Since retirement she and her family had been spending summers on Lake Six near 
Remus and winters in Palm Harbor, Fla.  She was a member of the LeValley United 
Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dale; one son, Eugene of Clarksville; two 
daughters, Lucy Stolt of Petoskey and Marjory Benedict of Ionia; two brothers, 
Lawrence Friend and George Friend, both of Florida; two sisters, Lucille Todd 
and Mildred Merrill, both of Florida; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home, with 
the Rev. Willis Braun of the LeValley United Methodist Church officiating.  
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends 
and relatives at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  A 
memorial fund has been established for the LeValley United Methodist Church.
