June 15, 1922 Takes Shotgun to Mark Ending of Life's Journey Herbert Courser, a prominent Orange township farmer, committed suicide early Monday morning with a shotgun. He was found lying in the yard, near the house, by his wife, an hour later. Mr. Courser, who had been in poor health for several months, was in bed when his wife arose and went out to the barn to milk. From all appearances he got up soon after she left the house. Neighbors heard the report of a gun, but Mrs. Courser did not and her first intimation of what had happened was when she saw her husband's form stretched out on the grass. He stood the gun on end and pulled the trigger with a stick. Mr. Courser was a highly respected man. there was no family or financial troubles and, though he left no note, it is the opinion of his friends that continued ill health prompted the deed. He was about 63 years old. Fred Brickley, justice-of-the-peace, acting as coroner, impanelled a jury, the verdict being in accordance with the facts. Jurors were Ernest Barnard, Harry Millsted, Edward Fell, Chas. Courtney, Wm. Seller, Charles Morse. Mr. and Mrs. Courser were in Portland Saturday evening, doing their trading. He seemed to be in his usual cheerful mood at that time. The wife and two children, Ernest and Dale, survive. The Courser farm is due west of Portland, a little west of where M-16 turns for Ionia.- Portland Review. Additional Comments: Tuttle Cem- Sec.2-Row 3 Certif. b.
