Benjamin Covert, father of our fellow townsman of the same name, was born in 
Virginia, December 9th, 1792.  In 1812 he was married to Sabrina Runyan, who 
was born in Herkimer county, N. Y., 1794, and still survives with seven sons 
and six daughters.  Mr. Covert moved to Michigan in 1845, and settled in the 
township of Keene, Ionia county, on the same tract of land which he improved 
and tilled himself until the present summer, when sickness for the first time 
in his life disabled him.  He served in the war of 1812, and many were the 
incidents of thrilling interest which he remembered and frequently related of 
that experience.  His life was long and useful.  A man modest and unassuming, 
yet firm and constant in his integrity, he has left an enduring influence for 
good in the lives of those who have been associated with him in the social and 
domestic relations.  He leaves the companion of a marriage which lasted 64 
years.  Peaceful and happy has been this long union.  Seven sons and seven 
daughters have grown up to manhood and womanhood under their united care, all 
of whom, except one daughter, still live.  He died on the night of July 14th, 
after an illness of a few weeks.  The funeral services were held at his 
residence on Sunday, July 16th, Rev. L. R. Gautl, of Disciples’ church, 
officiating.  Except one son, who lives in Maryland, all of his sons and 
daughters, with children and childrens’ children, were permitted to be present 
to join in the last sad tribute of respect to him who had so long been to them 
a faithful and loving father.
