Covert. The funeral of the late Riley W. Covert was held from the residence, corner Washington and Jackson streets, Monday morning at 10 o'clock, the house being filled with relatives, and a large number of friends. There was a large representation of the business men of the city, among whom he was held in the highest esteem. The services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Scott, who preached an appropriate sermon. Mr. Scott was assisted by Rev. Dr. Oxtoby. The music was furnished by Mrs. Eugene Smith, Miss Katie Spencer and Miss Avis Simmons. The flowers were beautiful. There were no set pieces, simply a profusion of Easter lilies, callas, pink and white roses, carnations, etc., the top and sides of the Casket being covered. A panel, of Mermet roses came from the members of the Church of Christ; panel of lilies, Mr. and Mrs. James R. Taylor; panel of roses, Mrs. A.W. Merriam; panel of assorted roses, F.A. Sessions; panel of callas and lilies, Eldon P. Mains and Fred Thomas of the First National bank; panel of roses, Miss Jennie Tibbits of Detroit; bunch of callas each, from Mr. and Mrs. K. R. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Wardle, and H. Van Allen; panel of white carnations, Mr. and Mrs. Lee M. Hutchins, Detroit; large bunch of Easter lilies and callas, from the Ionia County Savings bank, Webber Bros. bank and W. C. Page & Co.'s bank. The remains were carried to their last resting place by relatives of the deceased, John A. Sessions, Frank A. Sessions, Fred A. Stiven of this city and Elmer Covert of Grand Rapids. The interment was in Highland Park. Relatives here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Prudence Tower of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Dr. T.M. Benedict of Greenville, Miss Jennie M. Tibbitts of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Covert and son Frank of Keene and Fred C. Lee of Keene. Riley W. Covert was born Dec. 25, 1855, was 38 years of age. After graduating from school he took up the practice of medicine. He was married to Lillian J., daughter of Hon. Alonzo Sessions, in 1878, after which he went to Portmouth, Ohio, where he practiced medicine. He soon after removed to Grand Ledge, from there successively to Nunica, Spring Lake, Fruitport and Casselton, Dak. About four years ago he returned to Ionia from the latter place. Here he entered the First National bank as bookkeeper, and was later promoted to teller, which position he held at the time of death. His wife and two sons, Sidney, aged 15, and Hal, aged 7, survive him. He was a man who made many friends, and one who was respected and honored by all. He had been sick for several weeks, but its seriousness was not realized until only a few days ago. The blow was a sad one to the community, and his family have the sympathy of all.
