R. Covert Dead. Civil War Veteran and Pioneer Shoemaker Passes on at Ripe Age of 83 Years. Benj. R. Covert, pioneer resident, and one of Ionia’s best known veterans of the Civil war, died this morning at 3:00? o’clock, after an illness which kept him close to the house some three years. During the last several months he has been unable to leave his home any particular distance, though he was confined to his bed for only a short time. He would have been 84 years old had he lived to November. Mr. Covert was born in PennYan, New York, November 29, 1832. He came to Michigan in 1845 with his parents, and settled in Keene township. Later a few years of his life were spent in Ohio, where he married Isabella Benton. They returned to Michigan to live after a few years spent in Ohio. Mr. Covert entered the army in 1863 and served to the close of the war in the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He was supervisor of his ward for about ten years toward the close of his life. He lived for most of his life in this city in the house where he died, on East Washington street, which he built himself in odd hours saved from his regular work during the early years of his married life. Uncle Ben Covert was one of the pioneer shoemakers of Ionia, a cutter a way back in the days of custom made footwear, and delighted especially in detailing reminiscences of the earlier business life of Ionia, with which he had a very intimate knowledge. He leaves two children, Mrs. F.A. Stiven, of this city and Elmer W. Covert of Grand Rapids. A sister, Mrs. Melissa Sparks of Grand Rapids, and a brother, William Covert of Belding, survive. The funeral will be attended Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Church of Christ. Friends who wish to see the body may do so Sunday morning from 9:00 to 12:00. Friends are asked to please omit flowers. ------------ Funeral of Benj. R. Covert. Respected Ionia Pioneer and Civil War Veteran Returned to the Dust. Rev. R.B.
