Residents of Ionia county were shocked with grief when word was received of the death of Harry Covert, 36, who hung himself in the kitchen of his home at Muskegon Tuesday morning where he was employed as local representative for a sewing machine company. Mr. Covert was well known throughout Ionia county, having spent his school days in Saranac, where he attended high school. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Covert, now residing at Rockford but who formerly were located at Saranac where the senior Mr. Covert operated a general store for many years. Mr. Covert is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Vercha Hawley, also a former resident of Saranac and for a number of years a resident of Ionia previous to her marriage and two daughters, Phyllis Jean, 8, and Beverly, 6; his parents, and one sister, Mrs. Leo Huhn of Saranac. No motive could be ascribed for Mr. Covert’s act in committing suicide, and no notes could be found in the home assigning reason for it. Mrs. Covert and two children had been at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hawley in Saranac, where her mother has been seriously ill, for a few days. Mr. Covert was at his place of business Monday and when he failed to put in an appearance Tuesday morning an investigation was started by employees, who forced admission into the home, where Mr. Covert was found hanging from a hot water pipe in the kitchen. He was fully clothed, and apparently had [unreadable word] that morning preparatory to going to his business when the act was committed. Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. Leo Huhn in Saranac Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock with services in charge of Doric lodge of Grand Rapids, assisted by Rev. Bateman of the Saranac Methodist church. Burial will be made in the Saranac cemetery.
