H. Covert, an old resident of Lowell, familiarly known at “Jim,” died December 4, at his home in this village, after a long illness, aged nearly 79 years. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. H. H. Harris officiating; burial at Oakwood cemetery. Jemerson H. Covert, oldest son of Henry and Polly Jane, was born in Keene township, December 13, 1841, and was the first white boy born in Lowell county. About 1861 Mr. Covert went to Canada, where, on September 7, 1863, he was married to Alice Grey Griffin; and they came to Michigan in December 1864. In 1866 they moved to Illinois and returned to Michigan in 1869. In 1874 he took his father to Maryland and brought him back in 1878. In 1884 he came to Lowell, and this has been his home ever since. Mr. Covert is survived by his wife and eight children: Mrs. Estella Sammis, of Ludington, La., Mrs. Wm. Landon, of Grand Ledge, Mrs. Charles Porter, of Detroit, Mrs. Charles Waters, of Hastings, Mrs. Fred Gilmer, of Grand Rapids, Bert, of Galva, N.D., Floyd, of Niles City, Mont., and Henry, of Lowell, also by 22 grand children and 7 great grand children.
