Walt Covey, 66, of Stanwood, passed away Friday, July 4, 2003 at Mecosta County 
General Hospital, Big Rapids, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born 
March 23, 1937 in Belding to Warren and Alice Goodwin Covey.

Walt graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1956.  He married June Marie 
Ellison on December 21, 1957, in Stanwood.  Walt was employed at several jobs 
throughout the area, including Hanchett Manufacturing in Big Rapids for more 
than 20 years, and later was a truck driver for IBEW Union 876, retiring due to 
his failing health.  Walter was a volunteer fireman for the Stanwood/Rogers 
Heights Fire Department for many years.  He was a dedicated and active member 
of the Mecosta County Sheriff’s Posse and was a member of Eagles Aerie 4360 of 
Stanwood.  Walt had attended Christ the King Catholic Church near Howard City. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carmen Grove; and great-
grandson, Dustin.  He is survived by his loving wife, June; two sons, Doug and 
Wanda Covey of Woodville, Rick and Joyce Covey of Stanwood; three daughters, 
Cindy and Kevin Fowler of Big Rapids, Julie and Bill Hoisington, Theresa and 
Henry Cook, all of Stanwood; three brothers, Gerald and Barb Covey of Stanwood, 
Robert and Mable Covey of Sheridan, Caron Covey of Stanwood; 15 grandchildren, 
and three great-grandchildren; former daughter-in-law Marcy Covey of Stanwood; 
former son-in-law, Ron Dennis of Big Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home, Big 
Rapids, with Father Phil Witkowski officiating.  An Eagles final tribute will 
be presented by the members of Eagles Aerie 4360 of Stanwood.  Burial is in 
Stanwood Cemetery.  The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. 
today at the funeral home.
