Born April 27, 1906, in St. Johns, he was the son of Ralph and Myrtie Barrett Cowles. A farmer and fruit grower, he was a former Otisco Township supervisor and also served as a county commissioner and chairman of the board of commissioners. He was a member of Belding United Methodist Church. He was married to Josephine Conklin in Elkhart, Ind., on Oct. 22, 1932. She survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Nancy) Clark of Howell; a son, Raymond Cowles of Belding; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Coyne Cowles of St. Johns. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Huffman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Nathaniel Johnson officiating. Burial will be in River Ridge Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial has been established for the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home.
