Whether the poison was taken with a suicidal intent is not definitely known, as the home life of Mr. and Mrs. Cowles was ideal. Neighbors speak only in terms of the highest praise of the conduct of the young husband toward the wife of but a few months, and he is prostrated by his sudden bereavement. Mrs. Cowles had been accustomed to taking the poison for some years, as a relief from headaches from which she suffered frequently, and it was known that she had been complaining of her head aching that Sunday morning, and about noon took what must have been an overdose. As soon as the mistake was noticed, Dr. G.A. Stanton was called, and the neighbors gave first aid to keep her until medical assistance arrived, but to no avail. Later, Dr. W.A. Dutt was called, and he, together with Dr. Stanton, did all that medical skill and science could do, but the effects of the drug had gone too far, and about 1:30 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, September 12, the light of life went out, and in the heart of the young husband was placed a burden of sorrow that only long years of time can efface. Hazel Fredricka Goff was born October 17, 1893, in Otisco township and had passed her entire life near this city. On January 28, 1915, she was united in marriage to Charles Cowles, Rev. W.E. Doty performing the ceremony. A few brief months of happy wedded life was theirs. She leaves to mourn their loss, besides the husband, a mother and grandmother, and a large circle of friends. When loving hands performed the last sad tasks for deceased, her wedding gown, a beautiful creation of white satin and lace, garbed her form for the first time since her wedding day. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. W.E. Doty, were held at her late home yesterday afternoon at two o’clock, and burial was made in the Cowles family lot in Smyrna cemetery.
