August 22, 1935 KARL E.COWLES Karl E. Cowles, 61, well known resident of 315 E. Division street, died at his temporary home on the Chickering farm south of this city early Saturday morning following what was pronounced a stroke of apoplexy during his sleep. The previous day Mr.Cowles had been about his work in the onion fields on the Chickering farm. He was not in the best of health for some time but no immediate alarm had been felt over his condition. Mr. Cowles was born in Keene township on the farm now known as the Je Jacoby farm. with his father, Charles Cowles, he moved to the farm known by the family name two miles south of Smyrna, at the age of 7 years. In 1899 he was married to Miss Maggie Kohn of Otisco township, who with their two children survive. Mr.Cowles was looked up to as a successful farmer and in 1919 moved to Belding where his remaining days were spent doing factory and farm work. Funeral services were held at the Fitzjohn Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon. Rev. H.S.Ellis officiated and interment was in the Smyrna Cemetery. The survivors besides the widow, are a daughter,Mrs.Robert Powell of Grand Rapids, and a son,Marshall of St.Louis, Missouri; also two brothers,Will of Smyrna and Bela of Orleans, besides several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
