Cowles, War Veteran, Was Buried Monday Charles S.Cowle, 65, a lifelong resident of Belding, died Friday at United Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He had been in ill health for the past four years. Mr.Cowles was born February 9, 1898, in Smyrna, the son of Mr.and Mrs.R.Spencer Cowles. On April 2, 1919, he was married to Gladys Hamilton of Alpena at Ashley, He was employed over a period of 16 years by Gibson Refrigerator Company, Greenville, and in recent years, prior to his illness, engaged in his own construction business. A Veteran of World War I, Mr.Cowles fought with the 3rd Division of the 10th Field Artillery in the battles of Aisne, St.Minel, Marne, Nuise and Argonne, having been shell-shocked and gassed in the Argonne battle. He was a past commander of Cleveland-Wolverton Post 3794, Disabled American Veterans Flat River Chapter 106, Raymond I Booth American Legion Post, all of Greenville. Surviving are his wife' two daughters, Mrs.F.W.Schade, Albion, and Mrs.James Hansen, Greenville; one son, Richard Cowles, Belding' three sisters, Mrs.Jesse Mast and Mrs.Wallace Johnson, Belding and Mrs.James Dean, Lake Odessa; and one brother, Claude Cowles, Grand Rapids. Surviving, also are five granddaughters, and 11 nieces and nephews. One great-granddaughter. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 P.M. at the Fitzjohn Funeral Home with the Reverend Luther Brokaw of Grand Rapids officiating. Pallbearers were Burr Smith, Clayton Campbell, George Fitzner, Charlie Loper, Don Seeley, Charles Wright, Frank Hubbard and Herb Kent. Burial was in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Greenville, where Military graveside services were conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans organizations of Greenville.
