Ionia Daily Sentinel, 20 Jan 1906

The sudden death of John Cowman, sr., father of ex-Supervisor John W. Cowman, 
occurred at his home last evening.  Mr. Cowman had been feeling unwell for two 
days but the end was not looked for.  He was in town an hour before death 
occurred.  Mr. Cowman was 80 years of age and the first Irish settler of North 
Plains, coming there upwards of 60 years ago.
