PROMINENT SURGEON DIES HERE SUDDENLY

Ionia City and County residents alike, friends and patients of Dr. T.J.Cox, 
were shocked to hear of his sudden death about noon Wednesday, Oct. 31. Dr. 
Cox was en route to a Grand Rapids hospital by ambulance, following a heart 
attack at his home and died in the ambulance.

Dr. Cox had been a resident of Ionia since January 1949. His office was in 
the state Savings Bank, and his home was the former Beahan home at 530 High 
St., which he bought soon after he came to Ionia and remodeled into a 
beautiful piece of property.

Dr. Cox was a graduate of the University of Texas Medical School. He interned 
at Hurley Hospital, Flint, and spent four years in graduate training in 
surgery there and at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor.

He spent 44 months in the military service during which time he rose from the 
rank of first lieutenant to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Twenty-four 
months of that time was spent in overseas service with 15 months in the 
Pacific  Theatre and the remaining nine months in Europe.

In October, 1950, Dr. Cox was awarded a Fellowship in the American College of 
Surgeons, given in recognition of his proficiency in general surgery. He was 
notified of the award by letter from the American College of Surgeons and the 
award was made on October 27 at the thirty-sixth annual Clinical Congress of 
the American College of Surgeons in Boston, Mass.

Funeral arrangements have not as yet been completed.
