One of a family of ten children, but two sisters are now living; Mrs. Susan Ringgenberg and Mrs. Marie Rooney, both of Bourbon, Indiana. He was married to Miss Catherine Amanda Hawk at Sulphur Springs, Ohio April 1, 1860. Her death occurred in Ionia November 20, 1883. To this union were born eight children, four boys and four girls, seven of whom survive, Charles Cox of Chase, Mrs. Maude Brock and William Cox of Keene, Mrs. Eva Robinson of Lyons, Mrs. Margaret Runyan of Lake Odessa, Frank Cox of Detroit and Mrs. Dora Spoon of Grand Rapids. These with sixteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and a host of friends hold dear the memory of him whose life has been one of happiness and kindness. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. L 10th Ohio Cavalry, serving as Second Lieutenant until ill health compelled him to get out of the service, receiving his discharge in 1863. He afterward engaged in saw mill business and in 1866 came to Michigan, bringing the saw mill with him and setting it up in Odessa Center. The rest of his life has been passed in Michigan, mostly near Lake Odessa until the past six years, which he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Robert Brock in Keene, where he died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 12, 1919. Rev. A. H. Lash, pastor of Lowell Congregational church spoke words of comfort and sympathy to the assembled family and neighbors, followed by prayer. The casket covered with flowers, was borne from the home by the sons and sons-in- law, and taken by auto to Lake Odessa, where the funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the Masonic temple, under the auspices of the F. and A. M. of which Mr. Cox was a charter member and also a life member.
