Carmen was born April 17, 1828, in Saratoga county, N.Y., where she lived with her parents until her marriage to Stephen Wilcox Aug. 19, 1850, and came with him to Michigan, July 2, 1852, and settled in what is now known as South Ionia having purchased the farm on which the asylum now stands. Besides working his farm Mr. Wilcox engaged in the business of his profession, taking deguerretypes" and continued at that until stricken with typhoid fever of which he died Oct. 2, 1862, leaving his wife with four small children, the youngest only five months old to battle with life alone among strangers. She by her own efforts managed to keep her little family together, educating and training them as only a mother can and from that day until the day of her death has been untiring in her ministrations to them. Feb. 19, 1868 she was married to Rev. J.M. Coe, a Baptist minister, with whom she lived very happily until death called home to his reward April 8, 1891, after which being alone she decided to sell her home where she had lived since coming to Michigan and bought the home on West Washington street so as to be near her children. But failing health and old age compelled her to give it up last April and live with her daughter, Mrs. Fred S. Arnold where she passed away very peacefully Jan. 4, 1915. Her last illness was characterized by the same thoughtful patient manner that had marked her whole life. She was an earnest Christian, being the oldest member of the Baptist church of Ionia. She leaves four children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild to mourn her loss. A noble life has ended, a noble work is done and she has already heard the Master say "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy, prepared for the children of God. Weep not, dear children, her spirit is near, Still keeping watch over her loved ones so dear; Stilled is her voice but the echo's yet tell; Weep not for me, for I know all is well.
