A Number of Them Were Serious. Death Came as Result of One. Falling Brick Strikes Miss Coykendall. There were several accidents in the city this week and one in the country about two miles out in Orleans township. One of them proved fatal and as a result Miss Elsie Coykendall a most estimable young lady without a moments warning surrendered her young life. A brick fell from the scaffold of the laborer who at the time were working on the east tower of the new silk mill striking Miss Coykendall on the head near the temple with such force that she fell to the ground unconscious and remained so nearly all the time until her death which occurred at 3:20 o’clock Tuesday morning. The unfortunate girl who was employed in the new fabric mill of Belding Bros. & Co. as a loom operator got excused from work a few minutes before the noon hour, intending to purchase some flowers and send to a sick friend in Petoskey where her parents reside. Just as she stepped out of the mill and off the platform she stopped for a moment and the falling brick struck her, she was taken to the office of Dr. Pinkham bleeding from the wound. It was soon ascertained that she boarded at Chas. A. Cribb’s and was taken to his residence, where everything possible was done for her. It was at once discovered that the injury was serious and Dr. Richard Smith, surgeon of Butterworth hospital of Grand Rapids was summoned and performed the operations of trephining. The skull had not been fractured but a large clot of blood had formed as a result of the terrific force of the blow, death from which could not have been avoided by human skill. Dr. Richard Smith was assisted in his operation by Drs. Pinkham, Morris and Wilson. It was most skilfully executed, revealing the fact that the fearful concussion had been such as to preclude the possibility of her life being saved. The Belding Bros. & Co. were greatly grieved over the unfortunate accident and have done everything possible to render their assistance and sympathy. Miss Coykendall was 22 years old and had been here only a few months. She was an excellent young lady and well thought of by her employers. The grief of a sister who came Tuesday was pitiful in the extreme. No blame is attached to the workman on the building as it was wholly accidental. Her remains were taken to Petoskey Wednesday morning, a brief service in which Rev. H.N. Spear officiated being held at Mr. Cribb’s Tuesday evening at 7:30 o’clock. W. B. Reed, C.A. Cribb, Mrs. Chas. Youngs and Allie Sabin the latter an intimate friend accompanied the sister of the deceased on her sad journey home with the body remaining until after the funeral.
