Wave, Thursday, July 30, 1931 A SECOND ACCIDENT TAKES WOMAN'S LIFE Car Burns While Mrs. Harry Craig is Pinned Under it. Party Returning from Vacation. When Mr. and Mrs. Harry Craig and son Harry, Jr., and Ulysses Ayers of Battle Creek were returning from a vacation spent in the northern part of the state, they had reached a point on M-14 near the James Peacock farm house when a hat of one of the men blew off and the driver applied the brakes to the car which was going at a rapid rate having just passed the car of Mrs. George Humphrey of Ionia, who was also driving south. Mrs. Humphrey passed the wreck and hurried to a farm house and phoned to Lake Odessa and to Ionia for help. When the brakes were applied the car swerved, rolled over twice and burst into flames with the woman pinned under the car, according to Mrs. Humphrey. Others seeing the tragedy hastened to the scene, the first ones being William Downing. Earl Barkley and William Ehlens, who were working in a field not far away. Mrs. Elwood Peacock was also soon at the scene. The men lifted the burning car from the woman but she breathed only a few times afterwards. It is said her neck was broken by the impact. The fire had burned off her clothing. Mr. Craig suffered a broken collar bone, a lung puncture and was badly cut and bruised. Ayers was badly bruised, cut and burned. All the injured were taken to the local hospital here at Lake Odessa and treated by Dr. M.A. Hoffs, who believes that all three will recover. Mr. Craig's injuries are very serious however. Coroner J.B. Boynton of Ionia was called and the body of Mrs. Craig was taken to the Wortley & Baine undertaking parlor here. The funeral was largely attended at the family home near Battle Creek, it is estimated 200 people were present. The Craig family live on a farm four miles east of Battle Creek on the Lansing road. They are well known residents of the victims. Besides the son Harry, Jr., who was with them at the time of the accident, they have two daughters, Aubrey, 17, and Joyce, 11. The two girls were waiting at home for their parents and did not know of the tragedy until informed by newspapermen from Battle Creek.
