Crandall, 75, of Trufant, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2003 at Florida Hospital, Lake Placid, Florida. Phyllis was born September 13, 1928, the daughter of Mary and Charles Ogle, in Breckenridge. She was raised by her grandparents in Clare and attended high school there until her senior year. She graduated from Belding High School, where she met her husband, Jack. They were married in Belding on September 2, 1948. Since the early years of their marriage they were faithful members of First Congregational Church, Belding. Phyllis began working as an assistant at Forest Grove School for handicapped in 1963. She began earning her teaching degree while working full-time to help provide college education for her three children. She earned her degree in special education from Michigan State University and taught at Freedom Acres in Ionia. Later she went on to earn a master of arts degree in special education. Phyllis retired in 1988, after teaching children with special needs for 25 years. After retiring she and Jack lived at Rainbow Lake, Trufant, for six months of the year and at Lake Placid, Florida the other six months. Phyllis loved strong friendships. Throughout her life she made many friends and always remained loyal to them. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her family always came first. She loved to travel and took Jack, her family and friends on trips across the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America, and China. She had a strong will and determined personality, which gave her the ability to fight rheumatoid arthritis for 40 years and live life to the fullest. Phyllis is loved by many and will live on in their hears and through their thoughtful deeds. She was preceded in death by her very close aunt, Thelma Carlton Olson of Belding. She is survived by her husband, Jack; three children, Christy and Donald Ketchum of Woodland, Steve Crandall of Texas, Jane Crandall and Samuel Cornelius of Gaylord; six grandchildren, Alex Ketchum of Woodland, Jason, Erin and Adrianne Crandall of Texas, Andrew and Morgan Cornelius of Gaylord; cousin, Kendra Bailey of Belding; uncle and aunt, Merritt and Glen Erle Ogle of Texas; and half brother and half sister, Robert and Margaret Smith of Breckenridge, Donna Knapp of Houghton Lake. Memorial services are 1 p.m. December 20 at First Congregational Church, Belding, to celebrate and remember Phyllis Crandall’s life. The Rev. Dick Woodard will officiate.
