The young man was last seen in a sailing canoe on the pond a short distance above Smyrna. The overturned canoe was found yesterday morning giving the first indication that he had lost his life. Crane played baseball with his pupils after school was dismissed Thursday night and then suggested a trip in the canoe. The pupils feared to go because their parents had instructed them not to enter the canoe so Crane went alone. The boys watched him paddle out into the wind and then hoist his sail. They saw him carried rapidly out of sight behind a pier or projecting point and then went home. When the young man failed to appear at his boarding place for supper nothing was thought of it as he often was invited to eat at the homes of his pupils. It was not known that he had not returned until breakfast time yesterday morning. When he failed to appear at school the boys who had seen him in the canoe told of it and the search was started. The canoe was found floating overturned. The sail was at the other side of the lake. The water in the pond was lowered at the dam and searchers dragged in about six feet of water. The body was recovered at 3 o’clock. It was apparent that Crane was trying to swim when he drowned. He was a strong swimmer, it is stated. The funeral for Harold Crane will be held from the residence of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Crane, South Ionia, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock and from the Baptist church at 2:30. Rev. E. E. Branch will officiate and burial will take place in Highland Park cemetery.
