Velma was born May 12, 1912, in Remus, the daughter of Frank and Maude Lyon Case. Velma lived on a family farm in Remus as a young child and then moved to DeWitt for a short time. The family then moved to the Belding area around 1925 where her dad and uncle, John Case, bought a building at 602 Harrison and named it Case Bros. Groceries. Velma, her brother, Elmo, and her parents lived above the store for a while until they purchased the house at 608 Harrison and when Velma was 14 years old they moved into it. Velma’s dad built a cement block building next door to the house which through the years was a barber shop for her dad’s nephew and a beauty shop and now an apartment. Velma met her future husband, Paul “Jack” Cranmer, when he lived with Uncle Ray Cranmer across the street from Velma’s home. They were married May 23, 1930, and her parents gave them the house and her folks moved to another residence. They had four dear children. Velma lived in that same house for 78 years. After the death of her husband, she stayed in her home with her cat, Suzie, until ill health dictated a change for constant care so she moved to Metron of Belding. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Metron for their kindness, concern, patience and the respect shown Mom while a resident. They were and are wonderful to family members and we again thank them for that. Velma loved bowling and was a member of Belding and Greenville Lanes for many years. She enjoyed many summers golfing with family and friends. Her first love besides family was card playing, which she thoroughly enjoyed with family and friends whom she cherished dearly. She had worked at Murrays and Jolly Kids of Belding for many years. Velma was a member of First Baptist Church of Belding and Order of Eastern Star Doric Chapter No. 75. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack, in 1990; daughter, Marilyn Hardies, in 1985; son, Terry Cranmer, in 2001; brother and sister-in-law, Elmo and Helen Case; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Paul and Mildred Hessler; and uncles, aunts, nephews and great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Dave and Margaret Cranmer, Wayne Sr. and Donna Cranmer, all of Belding; daughter-in-law, Pat Cranmer of Belding; son-in-law, Don Hardies of Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Mark and Jamie, Paul and Kris, Wayne Jr. and Christine, Chad and Cindy, Matt and special friend Amanda, Dawn and Jim, Sandy and Tom, Linda and Kenny, Steve and Gaye Lynn; great-grandchildren, Erika, Andrew, Ashley, Sasha, Michael, Bryan, Christopher, Tyler, Jacob, Jason, Stephan and special friend Britney, Brian, Jonathan and fiancée Jennie, Hannah, Andrew, Logan, Zachary, Brendan; great-great-grandchildren, Allyha and Preston; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
