Mrs. Crawford was born in Balymena, Antrym county, Ireland, in 1793. Her family name was Gardner. She was converted under the ministration of the Rev. Henry Cooke of Belfast, we think in 1808, about the age of 15. She was married in 1815 to James Crawford and came to the state of New Jersey in 1816, where they united with the First Presbyterian church in Sparta. They removed in 1819 to Tyre, Seneca county, New York, where she united with the First Presbyterian church of Tyre, and at the time of her death was one of three surviving members who united with that church at its organization, where her husband was a ruling elder of the church until his death, which occurred in 1847. She removed to Michigan in 1856, consecrating herself in early girlhood to the service of Christ. Her religion was an active, cheerful, ever abiding faith, influencing her every act and motive, softening every sorrow, and brightening every joy. She was especially cheerful in the social and family circle and filled her long, beautiful life with love, charity and good works. Her death was not caused by disease, but was as falling into a restful sleep after a long journey. She was the mother of ten children, of whom four daughters survive her, Mrs. T. J. Marsh and Mrs. I. F. LeValley of Orange, and Mrs. Wm. Long of Washington, Gratiot, and Mrs. J. E. Campbell of Portland. Her funeral was conducted by the Rev. Levi Masters of Ionia, assisted by the Rev. J. F. Orwick of Orange, and the residence of her son-in-law, I.F. LeValley of Orange, where she has resided for the last 17 years and as her daughters bade her a tearful farewell, they could say with christian resignation – Lord, she was thine and not our own, Thou hast not done us wrong. We thank thee for the precious gift, Bestowed on us so long.
