                     Belding Pair Die In Snowbound Car

BELDING - Two snow-covered men were found two miles south of Belding early 
Thursday morning after the heavy snow covered their burned-out car during the 
night.

Richard Hull, Ionia county deputy medical examiner, reports that the faces are 
covered with smoke, indicating the two may have died of smoke inhalation.Hull is 
not sure whether all the bodies have been found yet or not.

"I'm assuming it happened after midnight," he comment, It happened sometime 
during the storm."

The victims have been identified as Donald and Doyle Crawford of 8347 West 
Palmer road in Belding. Donald 39, and Doyle, who is between 45 and 48, are 
brothers. Ionia state police made the identification.

According to Hull, the bodies were found about 7 am. by the Belding fire chief, 
Dave Nichols, as he was investigating the report of a burned-out car on M91 
north of Palmer road. Beside the snow-covered 1973 station wagon, Nichols found 
a shoe in the snow.

"When he picked up th shoe, it had a body in it," Hull relates. After alerting 
the state police and Hull, Nichols tripped over a second body, covered with 
snow.

Hull says clothing and wallets are still frozen to the victims bodies.An autopsy 
will be performed later when the bodies thaw, he says.

"One was huddled up next to the car, the other was laying face-down in the 
snow."Hull says. "There was snow in the car. We have no knowledge of any time on 
it."
