                 Asphyxiation, shock ruled in two deaths

BELDING - Two Belding brothers whose bodies were found Thursday apparently died 
from shock and asphyxiation when they hovered near their burning car on M-91 
near W.Palmer Rd. during early morning hours.

Ionia County deputy medical examiner Richard Hull, said the autopsy on Donald 
W.Crawford, 39, 8347 W.Palmer rd., and Doyle G.Crawford, 49, same address, 
showed tentative cause of death was from minimal carbon monoxide poisoning and 
exposure.

Belding Fire Chief Fain Nickel found the bodies around 7 a.m. while checking 
reports of a burned car along M-91. He found a 1973 Ford station wagon, spotted 
a shoe in the snow nearby and discovered the bodies.

Hull speculated both men were outside the car when the blaze fully developed "As 
soon as it (the fire) cooled, they got up next to the car to keep warm.

"Both the faces and hands were soot covered, but not burned," he added.

Hull figures the fire started around midnight."But the cold weather kept getting 
in on them and they were inhaling the hot air from the fire," he said. He heard 
the pathologist say death occurred around 4 a.m.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Huffman Funeral Home, with 
the Rev. Eugene Lewis officiating.

Doyle was born May 4, 1925 in Monroe, Tenn. He wa a mechanic. Donald was born 
Sept 3, 1935 in Monroe, Tenn. and was a painter.Both were single.

Survivors are their Mother, Ruby Crawford, Belding; three sisters, Mrs.Ann 
Regan, Belding, Mrs.Eleanor Johnson, Indianapolis, Mrs.Carol Sniff, Belding; six 
brothers, Leonard, Indianapolis, Gentry, Grand Rapids, Lynville, Indianapolis, 
Duane, Indianapolis, Norman, Belding and Jewell, Belding.
