Injuries In Court House Crash Fatal

Ionia county’s eighth highway death of 1945 was recorded last week with the
death in the St. Johns hospital of Fred Crippin, 75, who was fatally injured
when the car in which he was riding crashed into the Ionia county courthouse
Wednesday, August 8, during free fair week.  Crippin died in the St. Johns
hospital last Tuesday according to Ionia relatives.  The funeral was held last
Thursday at St. Johns.

Crippen died of skull fracture, jaw fracture, and internal injuries.  He was one
of four St. Johns men, the youngest of which was 65, who were en route to the
Ionia free fair.  They were driving down Union hill when the brakes of the old
model car they were driving failed and the car raced down the remainder of the
hill striking the courthouse on the north side just west of the north steps. 
Crippen and the remainder of the injured were removed by ambulance to the Ionia
County Memorial hospital and later to St. Johns.  Crippin was riding opposite
the driver and his head went through the plate glass windshield.  He was
seriously cut.
