L. T. Crocker an employee around the mill was at work in the basement cleaning up. It appears he had crawled under a shaft running about 2 ½ feet from the floor, to clean up some grain scattered under the smut machine. In attempting to back out, a projecting bolt of a joint of the shaft caught his jacket and was instantly drawn up and whirling in the air, striking a beam above the shaft at every revolution. There was no one else at work in the basement at the time, but the horrible thumping was heard by those above and the mill was shut down to see what was up. Crocker’s limp and lifeless body was found hanging to the shaft. His feet were whipped off and so was the upper part of his head and every bone in his body was broken. He was a single man, about 50 years of age. Subsequent Publication: Friday, December 19, 1884 W. H. Crocker, of Muskegon, was in the city last week to attend the funeral of his brother who was killed by the gristmill accident. Mr. Crocker was a former resident of this county, having resided here for twenty years before going to Muskegon. He was both surprised and pleased at the improvements that have taken place during his eight-years absence.
