Croel, 87, a long-time Ionia County resident, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Heartland Health Care Center. He was born July 7, 1915 in Ionia, the son of William Croel and Mary Alice (Chickering) Croel. Russell graduated from Lyons High School and worked for General Motors – Diesel Equipment Division, retiring in 1975. He was an active member of LeValley United Methodist Church for many years where he taught Sunday School. In his lifetime, Russell was a farmer, an artist, an Eagle Scout and a devoted gardener. He married the former Marian Miles on June 26, 1937, and she survives him. Also surviving are three sons, Philip, (wife, Susanne) Croel, of California, Stephen (wife, Janet), of Ionia, and Danon Croel, of Ionia; two daughters, Nicolene “Nicki” Dawson of Florida, Angela (husband, Aziz) Croel Tayfun of Virginia, as well as 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Croel, and sister, Alice Smith. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002 at LeValley United Methodist Church with Rev. David Flagel officiating. The family received friends and relatives at Cook Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia, both Sunday and Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to the family in memory of Russell B. Croel. Monies contributed will benefit LeValley United Methodist Church.
