G.A.R. VETERAN DIES AT FARM IN IONIA TOWNSHIP
William A. Croel Had Lived In One Home For Sixty-two Years

William A. Croel, Civil was veteran, who died Friday afternoon at his farm home in 
Ionia township, where he had lived for 62 years, was buried from the home Monday at

2 p. m. Rev. C.E. Thies conducted the funeral services and read the prayer beside 
the grave in Tuttle cemetery.

When a boy of 14, Mr. Croel left his native state, New York, to venture forth into 
the wilds of Michigan to make his home. The Civil war came on and he answered his 
nation's call, joining the Fifth Michigan cavalry.

Al through the war he fought, serving under Gen. Phil Sheridan. He took part in 14 
of the principal battles of the war, among them the engagements being Gettysburg, 
Winchester, Buckley Mills, Shendoah Valley, and the Wilderness. Although so badly 
wounded once as to be unable to continue with his regiment, he returned to the 
colors after a month spent in recuperating.

At the close of the war he returned to the farm in Ionia township, where he 
continued to live until his death. His wife Emiline died a year ago, after they had

been married 52 years.

He was 87 years of age, a member of the Masonic lodge and a member of the G.A.R.

Surviving him are three daughters; Mrs. Ella Pratt, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Walter 
Herrick, Stanton and Mrs. James Brown, Hubbardston, and three sons: Clyde Croel and

William Croel, Jr., Ionia township, and Lawrence Croel, who lived with his father on

the farm.
