She was the seventh of nine children, all of whom have preceded her in death except her sister, Mrs. Helen Stevens. Her father and mother came to Michigan from Perrysburg, Ohio, traveling from Jackson to Portland by raft, on the Grand river. When they arrived in Portland there was only a small settlement, and where Ionia now stands was an Indian village. She taught school from the age of eighteen until she was twenty-two, receiving for her labors the sum of $2.50 per week, and boarded from place to place at the homes of her pupils. She gave up her teaching to care for her sister’s child. She united with the Baptist church at Portland and was faithful to her church as long as she lived within its vicinity and always upheld the highest Christian ideals to her children and was glad when they chose to live accordingly, and never criticized when they saw fit to unite with some other church denomination. On Oct. 28, 1875, she was married to William A. Croel, with whom she lived for fifty-one years and four months, departing this life March 1, 1927, while preparing for the noon-day meal. For more than two years she was afflicted with hardening of the arteries and heart-leakage, but death came suddenly. To this union were born five children, Claude V., William S., and Lawrence A., of the home vicinity; Mrs. Walter Herrick of Stanton, Mrs. Jas. A. Brown of Hubbardston, all of whom survive. She had been a resident in this neighborhood for fifty-four years, taking a prominent part in everything that was for the community’s interest, and was a charter member of the Lyons W. R. C. The poor and afflicted always found her a friend in need and many are the friends who will cherish the memory of her services. She is survived by her husband, five children, a step-daughter, fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandson, and a host of friends to whom she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Funeral services were held at the late home Thursday afternoon. Rev. Thies of the LeValley church was in charge. The singers were Mrs. A. Bradt and Mrs. G. Steadman of Lyons. Interment was made in the Tuttle cemetery. Those from a distance who attended the services were Mrs. Ella Pratt, Grand Rapids; Mrs. Aaron Bauder, Rodney; Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Way, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Fry, Ithaca; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Mull, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Mull, Lansing; Mrs. Melvin Lapo and daughter, Lake Odessa; Mrs. Anna Chickering, Mr. and Mrs. E. Chickering, Belding; Mr. Frank Way, Mrs. Hughs and Mr. Fedewa, Portland; Mrs. C. R. Herrick, Mrs. Chas. Burgess, Mrs. Wm. A. Shafer, Stanton.
