Washington, a prominent lodge man and a resident of Ionia for many years, died shortly after 1 o’clock today from injuries received when he was struck by an automobile in Grand Rapids yesterday. Mrs. Culehan was at his bedside in a Grand Rapids hospital when the end came and prepared to return to Ionia this afternoon, when the body was to be brought here. Mr. Culehan was in Grand Rapids to attend the twenty-eighth annual convention of Michigan Shriners. He was struck by the car driven by Harry Bills, of Belmont, as he was crossing the near of the Grand Trunk station Wednesday morning. During the day yesterday the injured man was unconscious at the hospital and police officials were unable to learn his identity. A paper in his pocket on which the address was apparently James Culehan led authorities to believe he was an inmate of the soldiers’ home. When his identity was established late yesterday Mrs. Culehan was notified and went immediately to Grand Rapids. Examination by the physicians determined the man’s skull was fractured in two places. A depression of the skull was found and the skull was fractured at the base of the brain. An operation was contemplated this morning but Mr. Culehan’s condition would not permit it. He did slowly lose his grip on life and died shortly after noon today. Friends in Ionia were notified immediately. Witnesses of the accident say that Mr. Culehan was injured by the Bills’ car when trying to dodge another car. The two cars were going in opposite directions and Mr. Culehan avoided the one only to get in the path of the other. The driver was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.
