Albert B. Culver was born in Cayuga county, N.Y., Nov. 19, 1832. His parents moved to Holly, Oakland county, Mich., in 1839, where Albert attended school under pioneer conditions. He was later employed in Detroit for a time and came to Ionia in 1860, engaging in the book and stationery business. In 1861 he went into the army as lieutenant of Co. E, 1st Mich. Eng. & Mech, and resigned in fall of 63, on account of poor health. He resumed his business in Ionia, retiring in 1868, to “go on the road” for a wall-paper house, which business he followed until 1895, when he went to Mexico, where he and his son carried on a successful business in Mexican needle work and other articles, spending his summers north in sale of goods. In 1904, he sold his interest in the business so far as it related to the trade in the United States, but retained his stock in the manufacturing business in Mexico. Mr. Culver has always called Ionia his home, has spent some time here every year, and has retained his membership with I.O.O.F., orders here, and with William H. Borden G.A.R. post. Mr. Culver was married three times, his first wife being Miss Lucinda C. Griswold, to whom he was married in April, 1859, at Springville, N.Y. Two children were born to them, a son, Clarence, who died at the age of one year, and a daughter, Eva, who is the wife of Geo. M. Brown, and lives in Whitewater, Wisconsin. The first wife died in Ionia, October 10, 1864. In November, 1866, he was married to Miss Francis M. Smith, at Ionia, who bore him a son - A.B. Culver, Jr., now in Mexico. She passed away Jan. 28, 1872. His third wife was Mrs. Abbie B. Griswold, to whom he was married in February, 1874, at Springville, N.Y. A daughter - Abbie B. - was born to this union in October 8, 1875, who died at the age of 19. The mother died a few days after the birth of her daughter. It was his request that his funeral be held in Ionia, the service to be under auspices of the Oddfellows, and that Borden post turn out in a body. It appears that a law in Mexico prevents the shipping of remains until two years after death.
