The Veteran Justice of The Peace, and Familiar Main Street Figure, Passes From Earth. James Curry, for 30-odd years a resident of Ionia, and for 20 of these, consecutively, a justice of the peace from the First ward of this city, closed his eyes to the scenes of this world, at 4:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Deceased was a native of Ireland, born on January 6, 1836, and came to New York in 1852, where he lived until in the middle 60’s, when he came to Iona for the second, and permanent time. He was a carriage body maker by trade, and plied that vocation – pretty much all of the time in a shop of his own, for some 12 years after establishing a residence here. It was as a sagacious politician that ‘Squire Curry was best known and most successful. At the spring election in 1883 he was elected one of the justices of the peace of this city, and qualified on the 4th day of July of that year, and has qualified successively on every fourth 4th of July since – on July 4 last entering upon his sixth term of office. Mr. Curry was of unobtrusive makeup and bearing, but a keen reader of human nature. He was of decided judicial temperament, which adapted him peculiarly to such civil business as is incidental to the office he so long held, and much of which was brought before him. Deceased is survived by a wife and five children, all of whom are at present at home: James, Jr., Miss Louise, Miss Rose, John and Benjamin. A brother, Patrick, is a prominent farmer in Danby township. The funeral, which will be a large one, will be attended from the Church of SS. Peter & Paul, on Monday morning next, at 9 o’clock.
