Frank D. Curtis, Spanish war veteran and prominent Ionia business man, died suddenly Thursday evening at his home as he was ascending a stairway. Captain Curtis had been ill for more than a year, suffering from paralysis, but his death was unexpected. He was found dead at the head of the stairs by Mrs. Curtis upon her turn home. A physician who was summoned attributed death to acute indigestion, as Captain Curtis had been eating pecans. He was a member of Ionia lodge No. 36 F.&A.M.: I.O.O.F.; Maccabees, White Shrine; Queen Esther chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Capt. Curtis was in command of Company 1, Ionia military organization in the Spanish American war . Company 1 was organized here, and went to Island Lake under the command of First Lieutenant Glenn Lawless. After its arrival at Island Lake the appointment of Captain Curtis was made, and he joined the company there. He was in command of Company 1 from that time until it was mustered out upon its return to Ionia. For several years he had served the first ward of Ionia on the board of supervisors, and also served the city as alderman for a couple of terms. He was renominated for supervisor this spring. He is survived by the widow and a sister, Mrs. Charles Keeler, of Berkeley, Cal., and brother, Louis Curtis of Springport. Funeral services will not be held before Monday, awaiting word from the sister in California.
