George E. Curtis, Sr., Died At Home Tuesday Afternoon. Business Places Closed For Rites. Ionia’s business section was silent today between the hours of 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. as a final tribute was paid to the memory of George E. Curtis, 73, prominent senior member of the firm of George Curtis and Sons, who died at his home, 230 East Main street, Tuesday afternoon following a brief illness. Mr. Curtis was one of the city’s best known and most highly respected business men and with his passing the Ionia community has suffered a distinct loss. He was born in Berlin township in 1859, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin S. Curtis, pioneer residents of the county. His early years were spent in lumbering operations in the vicinity of Muskegon. In 1885 he married Miss Abby Pray and established his residence on a farm in Ronald township, In 1909 he came to Ionia and formed the business firm of George E. Curtis and Sons. He remained active in the business until about three weeks ago when he suffered an attack of influenza, the complications of which resulted in his death. He is survived by the widow; six children, Abby J. Curtis of Belding; Ray and George, Ionia; Mrs. Mabel Randall, Grand Rapids; Dr. Russell Curtis, Detroit; Mrs. Dorothy Clardy of Lansing; and one brother, Lewis. Funeral services were held from the home with Rev. Paul L. Stewart officiating. Interment was in Woodard Lake cemetery.
