November 7, 1935 PROMINENT FARMER KILLED IN ACCIDENT Fred Curtis Expires Soon After the Collision of His Car and One Driven by Harold D.Morrison of Grand Rapids. Another victim is added to the increasing number of automobile accidents. The stricken family this time is that of Fred L.Curtis whose home is just northwest of Lake Odessa. Mr.Curtis was returning to hi farm home about two mile north of Lake Odessa from a district wheat meeting at the Berlin town all where he had gone to make arrangement to sign federal government reduction contracts for next year and was alone in his car. He attempted to cross the intersection at the Lake Odessa road with US-16, when his car was struck by a car from the east driven by Harold D.Morrison of Grand Rapids. The car struck him on the side near the left rear wheel. The impact whirled the Curtis car around sharply and resulted in the Odessa man being pitched out of the machine several feet. The Morrison car caromed off toward the same southwestern side of the intersection ending up by the side of a big tree. The accident happened about 5:30 p.m. Mr. Curtis was still alive though badly cut when picked up a few minutes later by other motorists. He died about 20 minutes later before an ambulance could reach the scene. Mr.Curtis, it was believed, died of a fractured skull received when his head struck the side of his car. Because of face cuts he also received, there was some difficulty at first in positively identifying him and this was not done definitely until a close friend and one of Mr. Curtis' sons arrived at the scene. Mr.Curtis was the son of Henry and Frances Fought Curtis and was married to Miss Della Black of Ohio in 1904. He leaves besides his widow, two sons Roland and Wayne, his mother, and a brother Charles at Houghton, Mich. Mr.Curtis was a prominent Odessa farmer. He served several terms as supervisor of his township. He was a member of the Central Methodist church here where the funeral will be held this (Thursday) afternoon, at 2 p.m. Additional Comments: Lakeside Cem.#7-798-1 File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/c/curtis43789nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.7 Kb
