Cusack passed away Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Spectrum Health Butterworth campus. Herb was the oldest of 10 children born to Ernest and Estelle (Myers) Cusack on January 13, 1942. He is survived by his nine siblings: Bill (Ann), Dan (Mary), Kenny (Mary Jo), Becky, Janice, Pat (Sherry), Mary (Lawrence), Colleen, and Jim. Herb graduated from Lake Odessa High School in 1960 and from Michigan State University in 1964. After proposing on their third date, he married his high school classmate, Peg Mosson on August 22nd, 1964. They were able to celebrate their 50th Anniversary last week with their family. From this union was born Mike (Shelisa), children Emily, Adam, and Isaac); Shelly Reiser (Tom, children Aaron and Charlie); Kerry Possehn (Gord, children Kyle, Kristie, Ellie, and Connor); and Mark (Andrea, children Caden, Jayce, and Taryn). Herb retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation in 1992. He was then a self-employed real estate appraiser until his death. He served on the Lake Odessa Fair Board, Ionia County Road Commission, Odessa Township Board of Review, Michigan Harness Horse Association and was a member of the American Society of Appraisers and a staunch Republican. Herb enjoyed cooking for his family every Sunday for 26 years, cheering on his children, grandchildren, and beloved Spartans in their sporting endeavors, finding new restaurants, coffee with the guys, and a spirited debate on basically any subject but especially politics and football calls. He was able to back up his opinions due to being a voracious reader, reading three daily newspapers for the majority of his adult life as well as a wide range of periodicals and books of all genres. Herb could also give you directions to basically get anywhere in Michigan and provide both street names and landmarks to help you get there. The family would like to thank Dr. Lee O. Stuart, Becky Eckardt, Pennock Hospital Wound Care, Thornapple Manor Rehab, and the doctors and nurses of Floor 6 and ICU at Butterworth for the extraordinary care that Herb and the family received during the past six months. You are greatly appreciated. Visitation for Herb will be held on Friday, September 5, 2014 at the St. Edwards Family Center 531 Jordan Lake St, Lake Odessa, MI 48849 from 2-4 and 6-9 with a Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at St. Edwards Catholic Church. Herb was a big believer in giving of his time, money, and talents, often anonymously. He was able to give a final gift by donating his corneas and tissues to help others. The family asks that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Lake Odessa Library or St. Edwards Parish.
