The Ionia Standard, Friday, February 19, 1915
Katherine Gastler was born in Diebung, Germany on March 12, 1830, and was the 
daughter of Baltes and Mary Gastler.  She came to American in 1858, coming 
direct to Ionia, where she was united in marriage to George Cutler on July 2 
of the same year.  She enjoyed a happy married life for 53 years, over 40 
years of which time was spent in the home where the light of her life went out.

Her husband died in the same home four years ago this month, since which time 
she has alternated her time with her two daughters, Mrs. Sophie Anderson of 
Ionia, and Mrs. Louise James of Zanesville, Ohio

Mrs. Cutler passed away on Thursday, February 11.  Had she lived until March 
12, she would have been 85 years old.  She was a faithful wife, an ideal 
mother, a good neighbor, and everybody’s friend.  She had been a constant 
Christian since her childhood, and a woman of unusual strength of character 
and sweetness of manner and disposition.  She had a way of winning friends, 
and made many, both her and at Zanesville, Ohio, who today mourn her death.  
Her faith was simple and serene, and she fared forth in God’s real home 
without fear, though she enjoyed and loved life and all the good things it 
brought her.  The deepest sympathy is felt for those nearest and dearest to 
her.

The deceased is survived by four children: Fred Cutler, Jr.; and Mrs. Archie 
Anderson of Ionia, George Cutler of Chicago, and Mrs. Leslie James of 
Zanesville, Ohio.  Also two grandchildren, Miss Ione Cutler of this city and 
Don Cutler of New York.  Thus passes another of Ionia’s pioneers who made the 
community better for having lived in it.
