At 6:30 this morning Fred Cutler, sr., ended a long life, the last months of which were spent in helpless invalidism. For about two months he had been confined almost constantly to his bed, and for a long period before could walk only with assistance. He was 80 years old on Decoration Day. Mr. Cutler was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and came to this country with his family when a boy of fourteen. His widowed mother, Mrs. Sophia Cutler, and several children settled in New York City, where he learned his trade of shoemaker. He afterward lived for a time in Buffalo, and later came to Michigan, living in Ionia county since he was 21 years old. He was in the shoe business here most of his life, giving it up at one time on account of his health, and living during that period on his farm south of the city. Afterward he went into partnership with his brother-in-law, Fred Miller, and their business was conducted until he gave it up permanently and retired to his farm. He left the country to live in town about twelve years ago, and during the past fifteen months has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.J. Defendorf. Mr. Cutler was one of the men who worked on the Pere Marquette railroad when it was first put through here, and is connected with Ionia business history prominently by virtue of his long and useful life here. He was a life-long and devoted member of the Methodist church, and served for some years on its board. Soon after coming to Ionia Mr. Cutler married Miss Elizabeth Miller of Woodland, who died six years ago. They had nine children, six of whom are now living – Mrs. Defendorf and Miss Ida Cutler of this city, George, Fred and Herman Cutler of New York City and Henry A. Cutler of Menominee, Wis. Mrs. H.F. Voelker and Miss Bertha Cutler were daughters, and a son died in infancy. On account of the sons in New York, the funeral will not be held until Wednesday afternoon. Service will be conducted by Rev. C.E. Hoag at the Defendorf residence at 2:00 o’clock. Burial in Balcom cemetery.
