George Cutler, Sr., was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, June 22, 1833, and would therefore have been 78 years old in June next. He came to America in 1854, and for a time lived in Washtenaw and Gratiot counties. He came to Ionia three or four years later, with the advent of the Detroit & Milwaukee railroad, being employed on the construction force. He seems to have liked the town, remaining here part of the time as an employee of the railroad company and partly on his own account, until 1862, when he went into the shoe shop of his brother Fred, to learn the trade. In 1880 he went into business for himself in the same store where he remained as head during his active life. He was first in business with his nephew, Geo. Lauster, under the firm name of Cutler & Lauster, which existed until about ten years ago, when his son, Geo. J., succeeded in the interest of Mr. Lauster. About a year ago the elder son, Fred Cutler, Jr., came into the business and the Cutler Shoe Co. is now the name under which it is carried on. Under the elder Cutler’s management the firm established a reputation for square dealing that was a valuable asset, and helped to place the trade on a sound basis under which it has flourished adoring the long period since. He was married in 1859 to Catherine Gastler, who survives, as do also four children born to them: Fred Cutler Jr., Sophia, wife of Archie Anderson, and George J., all residents of Ionia, and Louise, wife of Leslie James, of Zanesville, Ohio, who has been here several weeks. He also leaves one brother, Fred Cutler, Sr., and one sister, Mrs. Barbara Lauster, widow of Gotlieb Lauster, both residents here. For many years Mr. Cutler was active in church work, as a member of the Evangelical church, in which denomination he was licensed as a local preacher, conducting the service in the Ionia church each alternate Sunday for a considerable period. He always took an active interest in local affairs. He was never a self-seeker in politics, but was called to serve one term as alderman. He was of vigorous constitution, of remarkably regular habits, and up to four years ago enjoyed excellent health. At that time he suffered a light stroke of paralysis, but was able to give some time to business until about two years ago, when he suffered a second stroke, and had steadily failed until the end, passing peacefully away at the home on King street, where he had lived forty years, and where the funeral will take place on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, service by Rev. D. G. Ostroth, pastor of the Evangelical church. Interment Oak Hill. Subsequent publication: The funeral of Geo. Cutler, Sr., which took place on Friday afternoon, was largely attended by the many friends and relatives of the deceased. The services were in charge of Rev. Ostroth of the Evangelical church, assisted by Rev. W. K. Spencer of the Presbyterian church, the singing was by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. G. M. Phelps. Many beautiful floral pieces covered the casket, which was borne to the final resting place by the two sons and two sons-in-law of deceased: Fred Cutler Jr., Geo. J. Cutler, Archie Anderson and Leslie James.
