Tower of Grand Rapids, stating that his half brother, John S. Dallas, a native of Ionia, died there on the 26th. He was a grandson of Samuel Dexter, Ionia’s first settler, and was born here on August 6, 1844. His mother was Prudence Dexter, who married Wm. Dallas, the first surveyor and register of deeds of Ionia county. In his youth he moved to Grand Rapids with his mother, who married Daniel F. Tower, their home being on the site of the present police headquarters. In 1863 he enlisted, but was not mustered into service on account of his company being full. In 1864 he made a trip to California and has resided there continually, with the exception of several visits to his relatives in Grand Rapids. The body will be cremated and the ashes sent to Grand Rapids for interment.
