Dalzell, a well-known industrialist and lifelong Iona resident, died early Wednesday at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Dalzell, 71, was active in Ionia industry and civic affairs, serving as plant manager for the Mitchell Bentley Co. and on various local boards and committees. He was born in his lifelong home of 401 Harter St. on Dec. 5, 1908, the son of Fred and Lura (Wilson) Dalzell. He graduated from Ionia High School in 1926, Albion College in 1930 and the University of Michigan in 1932, with a degree in civil engineering. He became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity in 1928, and remained a lifetime member. Mr. Dalzell married Greta Haight on June 21, 1933 in Ionia. He went to work full time at the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co. in 1932, where he was a purchasing agent and held positions in the personnel department. He later became plant manager after the firm had become Mitchell Bentley, and retired from the A.O. Smith Co. in 1966. In addition to his industrial activities, Mr. Dalzell was a member of the Ionia Board of Education from 1950 to 1954 and the Ionia County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees from 1967 to 1976. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, serving as an executive board member of the Grand Valley Council and vice president of the council from 1957 to 1962. He received the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service in 1956. Mr. Dalzell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ionia, serving on the board of trustees and the finance committee. Survivors include his wife, three sons, John of East Lansing, Daniel of Ft. Benning, Ga., and Thomas, of Grand Blanc; and five grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Leddick Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Hausermann officiating. Entombment will be in the Highland Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home today and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church organ fund or the Ionia County Memorial Hospital.
