Young Mother Died Mon. Morning Mrs. Sarah Darby Leaves Family of Children, Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren and Many Friends. Funeral Wednesday. Mrs. Oscar B. Darby, a resident of Lake Odessa for many years, passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Minnie Cortright in Nashville early Monday morning, following a short illness. Aside from the daughter, she is survived by four sons, Homer H. at Flint, Roy G. at Jackson, Louis S. at Tampa, Fla., and Charles F., Lake Odessa, 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held from the late home here Wednesday afternoon with the Rev. E. H. Humphrey, pastor of the local Congregational church, in charge. Rev. Carey of the Progressive Brethren church offered a prayer, and he and Mrs. Carey sang two numbers, “Fade Fade Each Earthly Tie” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul.” The pall bearers were sons and grandsons of the deceased. Interment was made in Lakeside cemetery. Mrs. Darby, nee Sarah M. Powley, was born in New York city on February 13, 1848, and thus would have been 90 years old had she lived but 20 more days. When she was a small girl she moved with her parents, Peter and Melinda Powley, to Grand Rapids, Mich., where she became of member of the Fountain Street Baptist church. Later she was an alto singer in the choir of that church for four years. She was married to Oscar B. Darby of Campbell township, Ionia county, in 1871. Mr. Darby died on June 2, 1928. Mrs. Darby was a charter member of the Rebekah lodge at Lake Odessa where she was greatly loved and respected, always taking an important part in all its activities as long as she was able. She loved her home on Tupper Lake street here where she spent her summers after taking up her winter home with her daughter. Last winter she spent a few days in Florida making the trip by auto with her son Charles. She was always cheerful and energetic and life held much of interest for her. She never seemed to be old.
