Mr. Darling who had lived at 2646 South State road, was born in Paris township, Kent county, April 7, 1884, the son of Fred and Tryphena Bozema Darling. He came to Ionia in 1906 and started a creamery business on Depot street. He later took Gene Austin into partnership and built the Ionia Creamery on Main street, later building a creamery on Washington street and, with Earl Darling and Ralph Donalson, formed a corporation. After retirement from the creamery business he went into the real estate business. Mr. Darling was a director 39 years for the First Security Bank of Ionia, retiring from that position in December of 1971, and last year was named as director emeritus. He was a past member of the Ionia board of education and also served as alderman for the second ward six years. He served on the Ionia city council and a short term as acting mayor. A life member of the Ionia Elks lodge, he was also a former member of the Ionia Lions club and past president of the Ionia Chamber of Commerce. His wife Margaret died October 8, 1974. Among his survivors are two sons, Clyde Darling of Bedford, Ohio and Robert Smith of Chattanooga, Tenn; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Werner of Dearborn, Mrs. Dorothy Layhe of Kirkwood, Mo. and Mrs. Jean Rayburn of Spokane, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Leddick funeral home. Rev. Dr. Lloyd G. Walker of the LeValley United Methodist church will officiate and entombment will be at Highland Park mausoleum. Family members will be at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist church and the Ionia county chapter of the American Cancer society.
