Darling, 96, of Ionia formerly of Harrietta, Rodney, and Portland died Friday evening, Feb. 19, 2010, at Heartland of Ionia. She was born on July 28, 1913, in Hoxeyville to Earl and Bertha (Fiers) Brooks. Melvina was well known for her baking and enjoyed Tiger Baseball, tending to her violets and polka music. She loved her grandchildren. Survivors include her daughters: Delores (Walt) Saxton of Clare, Hazel (Fred) Wortley of Roosevelt, Ariz., Emma (Lee) Dobson of Englewood, Fla., Georgia (Steve) Spitzley of Portland, and Viola (Terry) Green of Mecosta; 25 grandchildren; 43 great grandchildren; 30 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Seithl Gilmore and Bonnie Klingbeil of Ionia; brothers, Gaylord (Brenda) Brooks of Ionia and Alfred Brooks of Alamo, Texas; brother-in-law, Leonard Vargason of Flint; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-mother, Jennifer Brooks; her husband of 53 years, James Darling; a sister, Vera Vargason; and a daughter, Marilyn Freeman. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac with Rev. John Mellish officiating. Burial will be at Banker Cemetery in Hoxeyville. Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mecosta County Commission on Aging.
