Mr. James Darrow was born in Middleton, Pennsylvania. February 12, 1846, lived there until he was a boy 9 years old. He then went to work on the Erie canal riding a mule on the toe path, his wages being only $4 a month and board. He took care of himself from that age on until he was 15 years old, he being large for his age and having a couple older brothers enlisting in the service, it made him want to go to war, so he tried to enlist and go too, but his age being against him, he failed and in a few days he enlisted in another place by stating he was 18. He passed the examination and he served his country 3 years and 6 months. His two brothers were killed, one at Fredericksburg and the other at Gettysburg, he being the only one of the three to come home. He was wounded twice with bullet wounds, a bayonet wound in his wrist and a dirt knife in his forehead. He enlisted in 1863 and was in Co. E. Pennsylvania reserves. Shortly after he came home he emigrated to Michigan in the year 1872. He worked in the lumber woods winters and in the spring he drove logs down this old Flat river, when Belding was called a hog hole. There wasn't much of anything here then. He followed this until 1880. He married Miss Della Shafer, of Sunfield, three children were born unto them, Maye, Maude and Charley. They lived in Sunfield before coming to Belding May 18, 1896 and have lived here ever since. Mr. Darrow worked as nightwatchman in the old sawmill for Joe Chapple, nightwatched for the Belding Bros. & Co. at MBI No. 1 and at mill No. 3 when it was called factory C. He nightwatched at mill No. 2, for the Dort- all the while it was in Belding, then nightwatched for the Hall Mfg. Co., finishing his work as his age had made him so badly bent and feeling somewhat feeble he made up his mind it was time to retire from all labor, this being one year ago last November, he being an old man of 78 years, but as young as a boy of 19 in spirit. He was of a kind an d loving disposition, and seemed to be loved by all who got acquainted with him. He has left a home of sorrow, but gone to heaven we trust.
