The floral offerings were very beautiful. The Ionia Daily Standard, Saturday, June 1, 1901 Mrs. Annabelle Guyberson Dates whose death we briefly recorded this week, was born October 18, 1848 in the state of Ohio. During her girlhood she removed with her parents to Michigan, where she resided until her marriage with Sidney H. Dates 20 years ago. For some years their residence was in Chicago, but two and one-half years since she returned with her husband to spend her last days in Ionia. Five years back Mrs. Dates was stricken with that insidious malady “atrophy of the muscles,” which in two years rendered her a permanent invalid; for eighteen months she had been quite helpless and when death released her last Saturday she was wholly without the power to move herself. Mrs. Dates’ life was of rare Christian power and beauty. Notwithstanding the exceedingly trying nature of her disease, she never once uttered a word of complaint. Patient and gentle to the last, her final word was the name of her husband, whose devoted wife she had all the 20 years been. The funeral took place Monday afternoon. Her pastor, Rev. W. H. B. Urch, preached the sermon from the words, “Being dead yet speaking.” Mrs. Dates had all her life been an honored member of the Presbyterian church here and in Chicago, with the exception of the past year when she transferred her membership to the Methodist Episcopal church to be with her husband. Mrs. Eugene Smith and Mrs. S. G. Allured kindly furnished appropriate music. Among the mourners were the deceased lady’s honored father and mother, her brother Carl Guyberson and daughter Fay from Grand Rapids, Mrs. Marion Hecox, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. B. Dates of Chicago, Henry Way and wife and Mrs. Homer Wing of Greenville, and Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Root and daughter. The previous remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. The floral tributes were numerous, conspicuous among them being a beautiful wreath contributed by Mr. Dates’ associates at the car shops.
