February 19,1919 SON fOLLOWS SON Wells Davenport Never Regained Consciousness After Operation THIS REVEALED A HOPELESS CONDITION OF THE BRAIN Prominent Danby Farmer, Who Had Resided in That Township Since Birth Wells Davenport, a resident of Danby township since the date of his birth, Dec. 6, 1861, died at his home a little east of Frost Corners early Friday morning. Dr. Myers, a specialist from the U. of M. had operated on him a few hours previous and the discovery had been made that there was no chance for a restoration to health. The operation consisted of cutting three holes through the skull to remove what had been diagnosed as mastoids, and to relieve trouble at the base of the brain. The operation was a delicate one. Dr. Myers came from Ann Arbor by automobile, bringing a surgical nurse, a trained nurse, and an assistant for the operation. Mr. Davenport was on the table nearly four hours and never regained consciensness. The exploration made by Dr. Myers revealed a condition which was believed to be hopeless. Drs. Allen, of Portland; and Fleming of Pewamo, were present. Mr. Davenport was a very successful farmer and was highly respected by all. He was a member of the Woodmen, carrying an insurance of $2000 in that order. He also belonged to the Odd Fellows' lodge, which had charge of services at the grave, following funeral services which were held at Congregational church Sunday, Rev. Truman F. Galt, of the Congregational church, officiating. Mr. Davenport married Miss Nellie Preston Sept. 11, 1890, who survives him. Leo, the youngest son, died at Lansing four weeks ago. The death was a great shock and probably had much to do with the steady decline of the father. Perry Davenport is the only surviving child.
